I finished mixing this song for my Project and Portfolio III class in Full Sail University. Give it a listen!
The main inspiration for this piece was a genre of music called “Russian Hardbass”, a club/house music hybrid genre originating in the far East. It features usually melodic and deep bass synthesized bass riffs that fill up an audio space, and usually feature punchy kicks that keep the party going. This type of song is usually used at more “hype” events, although this one in particular has more emphasis on creating a melody.
The rhythmic drum kit and bass were the main things that stood out in this project. They keep a consistent seat in the front, letting the listener know that it’s there to stay. With the bass, I had a choice between making it extremely “growly” on both parts, or more of a smooth alternative that doesn’t take up too much space int he audiosphere. I chose both, with the growls being more melodic to fit in with the rest of the track. The drum kit is my personal favorite piece of this project, with many small sound effects and quirks you may miss on your first listen through, making the drum kit feel more fulfilling.
The harmony and melody(due to the genre) are things I didn’t want to oversaturate the track with. They’re a series of 5 very simple chords. They key of the piece is D harmonic minor. The harmony was meant to almost “pluck”, making for short stabs that complement the meat and potatoes of the track. I made sure that the chords are able to distinctly be heard. The chord progression consists mostly of Fs and D flats. The sounds I chose have a “horror” feel to them, which I felt was perfect.
The synths that were produced perform the sole purpose of breaking the normalcy. There is a “wubbing” or scrubbing type sound effect that I use to break up the empty feeling spaces in between each pluck of the melody, keeping the listener’s attention. The other synthesizer I used was for the “More Vodka” sample that was created by me. I felt it fit the stereotypical “Russian” feel. The synth instrument I used for the “wub” was the ESP, built into logic Pro X. The sampler I used for the “More Vodka” vox was the Q-Sampler. The track number for the Sub is 20, and the Vodka Vox is 26. I created the More Vodka Vox by taking a clip of me saying the words in a Russian accent, cutting out the lower frequencies in EQ, pitch-shifting my voice down by a few semitones, adding some high cut EQ and giving it some reverb. The sub was created by turning up the speed of the synth and killing everything else in the first section besides”Noise”, tweaking with the last couple sliders.
I used a great deal of effects, including a reverb for my SFX(SFX Verb in the Mixer), and a distortion for the snare. I used many dynamic effects, such as EQ for the kick drum and basslines. I chose these to make things stand out more.
